Biometrics
How biometrics collection works for both USCIS domestic cases and consular processing cases. Covers Application Support Centers, post-specific requirements, and what to expect.
What biometrics collection is
Biometrics collection means providing your fingerprints, photograph, and signature to USCIS or a consular post. This information is used for identity verification and background checks.
Biometrics are required for most green card applications, but the process differs between adjustment of status and consular processing.
Adjustment of status: USCIS Application Support Centers
For adjustment of status cases filed inside the United States:
- USCIS schedules a biometrics appointment at an Application Support Center (ASC)
- You will receive a biometrics appointment notice (Form I-797C) with the date, time, and location
- Bring the appointment notice and a valid photo ID
- The appointment typically takes less than 30 minutes
Do not skip or reschedule without following the official USCIS rescheduling process. A missed biometrics appointment can delay your case.
Consular processing: post-specific biometrics
For consular processing cases, biometrics may be collected at the consular post before or during the interview. The process varies by post.
At Ciudad Juárez, biometrics and the interview are typically separate appointments on different days. Plan for at least two consular appearances over 1-2 business days.
Other posts may collect biometrics on the same day as the interview. Always check your specific post's instructions.
When biometrics may be reused or waived
In some cases, USCIS may reuse biometrics from a prior filing or waive the requirement. Whether this applies depends on:
- The type of application
- How recently biometrics were collected
- Current USCIS policy
Do not assume biometrics will be waived. Plan for a biometrics appointment unless USCIS explicitly tells you otherwise.
Dynamic items: verify with official sources
These items must be checked against current official sources:
- Current USCIS biometrics scheduling procedures and fees
- Post-specific biometrics requirements (varies by consulate)
- Whether your case requires a separate biometrics appointment or same-day collection
- Current rescheduling and walk-in policies at your assigned ASC or post
What can vary by case, post, or month
These notes come from the research module behind this guide. Use them as flags; verify official instructions for your case before relying on general guidance.
Clearly required
- follow the appointment-specific notice and current USCIS or post instructions
Conditional
- some case types may reuse or waive collection depending on posture
Dynamic (may change)
- ASC appointment procedures and post-local requirements
Unresolved
- do not assume the domestic USCIS biometrics model automatically governs post-based ASC instructions abroad
